Khergam Link Road Repair Causes Water Line Break, Residents Affected (2026) Water Supply Disrupted During Khergam Link Road Work

Residents of Khergam are facing temporary water supply problems after a drinking water pipeline was damaged during ongoing road renovation work on the busy Khergam link road. The incident occurred amid large-scale excavation work being carried out as part of a long-awaited infrastructure upgrade aimed at improving road conditions and easing traffic movement in the area. While the road redevelopment is expected to bring long-term relief, the sudden breakage of the water line has created short-term hardship for local residents.

The link road in question connects the Valsad Road from Chikhli Road Post Office, passes behind the Ramji Temple, and extends up to the main gate of the high school. This stretch is considered one of the most important and heavily used link roads in Khergam. Due to frequent movement of heavy vehicles, especially during the monsoon season, large potholes had developed along the road, making daily travel difficult and unsafe for motorists and pedestrians alike. Complaints from residents and commuters had been pending for a long time, prompting authorities to finally initiate road renovation work.

As part of the redevelopment plan, authorities decided to construct a cement concrete road on approximately 500 meters of the most damaged portion of the link road. The total length of the road is around one kilometer, and the CC road construction is expected to significantly improve durability and reduce recurring damage during the rainy season. The work has been taken up with full intensity, involving deep excavation and preparation of the base layer.

However, during the excavation process, a drinking water pipeline belonging to the local panchayat came in the way of the digging machinery. The pipeline was accidentally damaged, resulting in a sudden burst and heavy waterlogging on the road. Due to the water line break, drinking water supply was disrupted in four to five nearby houses, causing inconvenience to residents who depend on regular municipal water supply for daily needs.

The sudden water leakage led to a large accumulation of water on the road, temporarily slowing down the construction work and creating muddy conditions in the surrounding area. Local residents expressed concern over the situation, stating that while road repair work is essential, proper coordination between departments is equally important to avoid damage to basic utilities such as water supply lines.

Before starting the road renovation, the panchayat and concerned authorities had issued a public notice declaring the link road closed for two months. During this period, all small and large vehicles, including state transport buses, have been diverted to alternative routes. Despite these arrangements, traffic pressure has increased on nearby roads, as this link road is a crucial connector for daily commuters, students, and local businesses.

With the water line break incident, residents have raised demands for better planning and advance identification of underground utilities before excavation begins. According to locals, prior mapping of water pipelines and coordination with the water supply department could have prevented the disruption. Many residents also pointed out that water is a basic necessity, and even short interruptions create serious difficulties, especially for families with elderly members, children, or medical needs.

After the incident was reported, the panchayat took immediate action and began repair work to reconnect the damaged water pipeline. Officials assured residents that efforts are being made to restore normal water supply at the earliest. Along with repair work, residents have also demanded temporary alternative water supply arrangements, such as water tankers, until the pipeline is fully restored and regular supply resumes.

Local residents emphasized that they support the road development project and understand its long-term benefits. However, they stressed that such projects should be executed in a way that minimizes disruption to essential services. According to them, timely communication, proper supervision, and backup arrangements are crucial when carrying out large-scale infrastructure work in residential areas.

Despite the current inconvenience, many residents remain hopeful about the outcome of the road project. The poor condition of the link road during monsoon seasons had been a major problem for years, with deep potholes causing vehicle breakdowns, traffic jams, and even accidents. Heavy vehicles frequently damaged the road surface, making repairs ineffective and short-lived.

Once the cement concrete road is completed, it is expected to provide long-term relief by ensuring smooth traffic flow even during heavy rains. Residents believe that the new CC road will significantly reduce maintenance issues and improve connectivity between Khergam and surrounding areas. The upgraded road is also expected to benefit school students, emergency vehicles, and daily commuters who rely on this route.

The Khergam link road incident highlights the challenges that often arise during infrastructure development in semi-urban and rural areas. While development work is necessary, authorities are being urged to adopt more systematic planning methods to ensure that essential services like water supply are not disrupted. Residents have appealed to the panchayat and contractors to take preventive measures in future stages of the project.

As repair work on the damaged water line continues, residents are closely monitoring the situation and awaiting full restoration of water supply. At the same time, the community is looking forward to the completion of the cement concrete road, which is expected to bring lasting improvement to transportation and quality of life in Khergam and nearby areas.
