Manufacturing Unit of Chinese Manjha Busted in Dadra: Ahmedabad SOG’s Masterstroke

Manufacturing Unit of Chinese Manjha Busted in Dadra: Ahmedabad SOG’s Masterstroke

MBA Graduate from Vapi Jailed as ₹2 Crore Contraband Seized Just Before Uttarayan

In a massive crackdown on the illegal trade of lethal Chinese (synthetic) kite strings, the Ahmedabad Rural Special Operations Group (SOG) has uncovered a major manufacturing hub operating in the Dadra area of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. This “masterstroke” operation has dismantled a primary source of the prohibited string that causes numerous bird and human fatalities every year during the Uttarayan festival.

The SOG team raided ‘Vandana Industries’ located on the Dadra-Demni Road, where they found a large-scale production line for synthetic manjha in full swing. Contraband worth ₹2 crore was seized, and the mastermind behind the operation was apprehended in Ahmedabad.

Operation Dadra: Massive Haul of Machinery and Material

Acting on intelligence that the bulk of prohibited manjha sold in Ahmedabad was being supplied from a specific unit in Dadra, the SOG team coordinated with the local Silvassa police to execute the raid. Upon entering the factory, officials found laborers operating sophisticated machinery to coat synthetic threads with glass and metal dust.

The Seizure Details:

  • Finished Goods: 43,192 reels of synthetic manjha (Market value: ₹1.50 Crore)
  • Infrastructure: Advanced manufacturing machinery and raw material (Value: ₹50 Lakh)
  • Total Seized Assets: ₹2 Crore

The factory has been sealed, and the equipment has been confiscated as part of the legal proceedings.

From MBA Student to Criminal Mastermind: Viren Patel Arrested

The kingpin of this illegal network, Virenkumar Babubhai Patel (a resident of Vapi), managed to flee during the initial raid. However, after a high-stakes manhunt, the SOG tracked him to the Jivraj Park area of Ahmedabad, where he was hiding.

The investigation revealed a shocking background: Viren Patel is an MBA graduate. Driven by the lure of high profit margins, he applied his business knowledge to set up this illegal venture approximately two and a half years ago. Using plastic and synthetic materials, he built a robust supply chain to distribute these deadly strings across Gujarat.

The Business of Death: ₹5,000 Per Box

During his interrogation, Viren Patel confessed that he sold the Chinese manjha at wholesale rates ranging from ₹4,800 to ₹5,000 per box. His primary markets were the major cities of Gujarat, including Ahmedabad, Surat, and Vadodara. Despite the strict ban imposed by the State Government and the High Court, Patel continued to expand his clandestine business model.

Why is “Chinese Manjha” so dangerous?

Though named “Chinese,” these strings are locally made using nylon or synthetic fibers coated with crushed glass and iron adhesives. Unlike cotton thread, it does not break easily and acts like a serrated saw, causing deep, often fatal, cuts to the necks of commuters and the wings of birds.

Ongoing Investigation and Police Appeal

The Valsad and DNH police are now working with the Ahmedabad SOG to identify the suppliers of the raw synthetic material and the local dealers who purchased the finished reels. Efforts are also underway to arrest his accomplice, Javed Mirza, who remains at large.
