Triple Accident on Navsari Highway, 14 Bullet Train Workers Injured

The early morning hours of Saturday turned into a nightmare for commuters on National Highway 48 near Navsari as a horrific triple accident involving a private bus, a trailer, and a car paralyzed the traffic flow. The accident, which occurred near the Navsari Grid overbridge, resulted in serious injuries to 14 laborers working for the prestigious Bullet Train Project. This high-speed corridor, which acts as the lifeline of South Gujarat, witnessed scenes of chaos and rescue operations as the front portion of the bus was completely mangled upon impact. The incident has once again brought the issues of vehicular fitness and highway safety into the spotlight, especially concerning the transport of workers involved in national infrastructure projects.

According to the detailed reports of the incident, a private bus with registration number GJ-05-Z-1453 was transporting over 15 workers belonging to the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL). These laborers were on their way to the Bullet Train Project construction site when the disaster struck. The bus was traveling on the Mumbai-to-Surat track of National Highway 48. As the vehicle reached the slope of the overbridge in front of the Swaminarayan Temple near Navsari Grid, the driver reportedly lost total control of the vehicle. The bus driver, identified as Bhikhubhai Rathod, later claimed that the brakes of the bus failed suddenly while he was descending the bridge.

Due to the alleged brake failure, the bus gained momentum on the slope and crashed with immense force into the rear end of a stationary trailer with registration number GJ-06-BV-4371. The trailer driver, Deepugiri Goswami, had parked his vehicle on the side of the road because of an existing traffic jam ahead and was waiting for the road to clear. He described hearing a deafening thud as the bus slammed into his trailer from behind. The impact was so severe that the iron frame of the bus was crushed inward, trapping several workers in their seats. In the ensuing chain reaction, a car was also hit, completing the triple accident on Navsari highway that left everyone on the scene in a state of shock.

As soon as the accident occurred, fellow travelers and local residents displayed great humanity by stopping their vehicles to assist in the rescue operation. Because the front of the bus was destroyed, the workers were pinned inside the wreckage. Rescuers had to use metal cutters and break the windows to pull the injured laborers out of the vehicle. A total of 14 workers sustained various degrees of injuries. Emergency services and private vehicles were used to rush the victims to the nearby Kejal Hospital. Medical sources at the hospital have indicated that while 13 workers are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, the condition of one worker remains extremely critical as they fight for survival.

The Navsari Police arrived at the location shortly after receiving the alert to manage the massive traffic congestion caused by the triple accident on Navsari highway. The long queues of vehicles stretched for kilometers on the Mumbai-Surat track. The police coordinated with crane operators to move the damaged bus and the trailer to the side of the road to restore the movement of traffic. Based on the formal complaint lodged by the trailer driver, the police have started the process of registering an offense against the bus driver, Bhikhubhai Rathod, who is a resident of Vadoli village in the Kamrej taluka of Surat district. The investigation will focus on whether the accident was truly caused by a mechanical brake failure or if it was a result of negligent overspeeding by the driver.

This triple accident on Navsari highway has raised serious concerns regarding the safety protocols followed by contractors of the Bullet Train Project. These laborers, who leave their homes every morning to contribute to a national milestone, are often transported in vehicles that may not meet the necessary fitness standards. The authorities are expected to conduct a technical audit of the bus involved in the crash. The incident serves as a grim reminder for all transport agencies to ensure that their fleets are in top mechanical condition, especially when traversing busy highways like the NH48 where a single failure can lead to a multi-vehicle catastrophe.

The local administration is monitoring the situation at Kejal Hospital to ensure the injured workers receive the best possible care. Families of the victims have been informed about the incident. While the highway has been cleared for traffic, the psychological impact on the survivors and the witnesses of the triple accident on Navsari highway remains profound. The police have urged all heavy vehicle drivers to maintain their braking systems and adhere to speed limits while descending overbridges to avoid such life-threatening situations in the future.
