Valsad District Detects 200 New Leprosy Patients, Treatment Started for All
Valsad district has reported a significant public health development under the Leprosy Eradication Campaign, with health authorities confirming the detection of 200 new leprosy patients during a recent special survey. Following their identification, treatment for all patients has been started immediately, providing relief to health officials and local communities. The sudden revelation has generated widespread discussion across the district, highlighting both the scale of the issue and the effectiveness of active surveillance.
The Valsad district health department conducted this intensive campaign with the primary objective of early detection of leprosy cases and the long-term goal of completely eliminating the disease from society. Special survey drives were carried out across all villages in the district, where ASHA workers and health department teams visited households door-to-door and examined every family member. The survey work continued late into the night in several areas to ensure maximum coverage and accuracy.
During this large-scale operation, a total of 1,923 individuals were initially identified as suspected leprosy patients. These suspected cases were then subjected to detailed medical examination and diagnostic procedures. Due to growing awareness about leprosy at the village level, community leaders and residents actively cooperated with health teams, which significantly improved the effectiveness of the campaign and ensured better participation from the public.
The Leprosy Case Detection Campaign (LCDC) in Valsad district was carried out between December 8, 2025, and December 27, 2025. To implement the campaign efficiently, the district administration formed as many as 1,827 teams. Each team consisted of ASHA workers along with male volunteers, who collectively conducted surveys in villages, hamlets, and residential clusters to identify individuals showing symptoms of leprosy.
These teams were specifically trained to recognize early signs of leprosy, allowing for timely identification of potential patients. As a result of this focused effort, 200 new leprosy patients were officially confirmed in Valsad district. Medical assessments revealed that out of these patients, 91 were diagnosed with infectious leprosy, while 109 were found to be suffering from non-infectious leprosy.
Valsad District Leprosy Officer Dr. Jayshreeben Chaudhary stated that the health department achieved notable success during the LCDC campaign by identifying these new cases. She confirmed that treatment for all 200 patients has already been initiated without delay. According to health officials, leprosy is a completely curable disease if detected early and treated regularly, and there is no need for panic if proper medical protocols are followed.
The health department has also clarified several misconceptions regarding leprosy. Officials emphasized that leprosy is not a hereditary disease and that Multi Drug Therapy (MDT) is highly effective in curing patients. Early diagnosis plays a crucial role in preventing disability and long-term complications associated with the disease. For patients diagnosed with infectious leprosy, treatment is required for 12 months, while those with non-infectious leprosy must undergo treatment for six months.
At present, treatment for all non-infectious leprosy patients has already begun, ensuring that the disease does not progress further. Among the newly identified patients, nine are children, which has drawn special attention from health authorities. These cases are being monitored closely, and families are being provided with proper guidance and counseling to ensure complete recovery and prevent social stigma.
Health officials reiterated that the department remains fully committed to making Valsad district leprosy-free. Continuous monitoring, follow-up visits, and awareness programs will be carried out to ensure patients complete their treatment. The campaign has demonstrated that proactive healthcare measures and community participation can play a vital role in controlling and eventually eliminating diseases like leprosy.
The Valsad leprosy detection drive has now become an example of how systematic surveys and timely intervention can protect public health. With all patients under treatment and awareness steadily increasing, health authorities are optimistic that sustained efforts will lead to long-term success in eradicating leprosy from the district.
